Painting of the Trinity by Andrei Rublev

MOVING IN THE CIRCLE OF THE TRINITY

One title given to the icon is ‘the Welcome that makes a Stranger into a Friend’.  There is an open space at one side of the table. It is an invitation to each of us, to all of us, to take our place at Their table and to share Their meal and Their life. There is much revealed to us here about the mystery of the Trinity. The life of God, the life of the Trinity can only be understood in terms of loving relationships. They relate to each other in perfect love. They are in perfect sympathy and understanding with one another. They are full of gentleness and concern, of attention and affection, each for the others. This perfection of relationship, of openness to each other is not restricted to Themselves. They are not closed in on Themselves, careless of humanity. We are not asked to contemplate Them at a distance, as it were, admiring them but feeling that we are outsiders. The icon stresses the open place that is reserved for you and for me at Their table. The space speaks of hospitality, of invitation, or readiness to give Themselves and of welcome.

So the life of the Trinity is all about relationships, Theirs with one another and with us. In Their relationship with you They encompass all you could ever want of love, acceptance, complete appreciation, unending support and encouragement. They are the fulfilment of all you could yearn for. You are invited, then, into Their company; the best of company, to move within Their circle and to come to know the best friends you can ever have.

As you contemplate the three Persons round the table ask yourselves:  “Where is the table in reality?”  In some sense the table is all around us. Teilhard de Chardin speaks of God as ‘the surrounding atmosphere of our lives’.  You can rightly think then of God as surrounding you, as enfolding you in sympathy and understanding and care and love.

But in another sense the table is set in your own heart, at the deepest level of your being. The three Persons meet you within your hearts….within you. The Trinity is there at the deepest point of your being and They invite you within.

God without, God within – there is no limiting the mystery of the closeness of the Three Divine Persons to you, of Their presence to the most intimate details of your lives. Let them become the atmosphere in which you live your life.

How does this reflection speak to my relating …..with God?….with others?

A Prayer for Guidance

Father, I have to thank You for looking beyond my faults and for loving me unconditionally. Forgive me when I fail to love others in the same way. Give me eyes to see the needs of the difficult people in my life, and show me how to meet those needs in a way that pleases you. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
